I have had a chance to play this finally. Not much, but it certainly seems like a good cross between Ultima Online and Shadowbane.

Care to elaborate on that for those of us who have no idea what that maens? You know, for the sake of discussion.

Certainly! OK, so back in the day, you had Ultima Online. It was a very open world. You could fight monsters, pickpocket players, craft weapons and potions, buy a house and some acreage, form guilds. And of course PvP. There were no levels in UO, just skills ranging from 0-100. Skills got better the more you used them. So, you wanna be a swordsman, go swing a sword at some monsters (or people). There was a skill cap of 700 points in total. So you could have 100 in seven skills, of 100 in 6 and 50 in 2. Etc. You kill enough innocent folk and you go "red", meaning you can't go into town without the guards coming to Concordokken you. UO was great with it's "full loot" policy. You kill someone, all their stuff is now yours to take.

Then there's Shadowbane. It was a 3D world with focus on town building. The cool thing about Shadowbane was that guilds could siege other cities and either burn them down or take them over for themselves. You started at level 1 and worked up to 60, but the nice thing was you could form groups of 10 and each kill got you the same XP as if you were alone (as opposed to 10%). So, it ended up being pretty quick to get to level 60, maybe 10 hours or so. With each level you got skill points to use to train whatever you wanted for your class. There were also "sub-classes" called disciplines, such as wererat which would allow you to turn into a rat. In Shadowbane there was no "red". Kill anyone you want outside of town all day and the town guards don't care. There was no full looting in SB, you couldn't take their equipped items...

As far as I can tell Darkfall is a combination of these two great games. It's 3D with a huge world. It seems you can do much of the same things you could do in UO and Shadowbane. There's player built cities that can be burned down or conquered. You can craft stuff, kill monsters, or fight players. There appears to be full looting. You can go "red" by killing players of allied races, as long as they aren't at war with your guild. There are no levels, just skills, and they are trained much like UO.

Am I gonna get it? Probably not. I haven't even played Eve since Apocrypha came out. I don't really have time for it. Still, it seems like an awesome game!
